Maybe one of the things that's gotta give is the way we aggressively market food and eating in our culture. All that constant hype and imagery and all those conflicting messages and misleading information about what to eat and how much to eat ... it's anxiety producing. In addition to being a choice about health, food consumption has now become a choice about personality and lifestyle, and even a political statement, with so-called "rights" and "wrongs" implied at every turn. This is partly why, for many of us, eating generates such feelings of confusion and guilt and fear ... feelings it is reasonable to want to control.
It is true that eating disorders aren't about food, but it's also true to say they are at least a little bit about food. I just wonder if the increase in eating disorders isn't partly tied to the increased hype in food marketing.
