Instilling Hope

One thing that’s gotta give is the attribution of labels such as “chronic” or “unmotivated” to patients who are struggling. From personal experience, I can say that being told that I/my illness was seen in that way made my heart sink. The association of my case to such terms reinforced my feelings of hopeless and made me think that even the professionals believed they were powerless in helping me any further. I realize this is not at all the intention of these diagnoses descriptions, however I think it would be helpful to keep in mind the effect that these words can have on a patient who is already struggling to see a light in their struggle. Perhaps by being mindful of the use of such terms, it would help reaffirm to ALL sufferers that there is always hope and that recovery is possible for everyone. Nobody is a “hopeless case”.
