Victimization

One thing that’s gotta give is the way we victimize eating disorder sufferers. I think deep down the public, the medical community, therapists, and even family and friends view people with eating disorders as weak rather than unfortunate. We don’t view people who have physical illnesses this way. People think eating disorders are something we could avoid having if we were just strong enough, and that isn’t true. It’s a misconception we have to get over, because it results in our being treated with less dignity and respect. It’s why so many of us feel we’re being treated as though we are naughty as well as sick, and maybe even why we’re not given much choice or flexibility in terms of programming. Like we should just be happy with whatever is on offer. It’s really frustrating to not have this disease, and those who are unfortunate enough to be affected, taken seriously.
