The Power We Give to Food
What’s gotta give? The power we give to food. Food is inanimate, yet for many of us with eating disorders, we let food take on such a powerful role in controlling our life (e.g. our decisions, life choices, friends etc.). Rather than giving food the power it doesn’t deserve, I think it’s important to look underneath, dig deeper at what is causing us to give food so much power. When I eat, yes, food makes me full. But so do my emotions. When I picture my stomach, I tend to envision it full of fear and shame, not my lunch. But the feeling of fullness scares me, making it sometimes difficult for me to eat meals. So with giving away the power to food, we are also forcing ourselves to approach rather than to avoid our true emotions.
